About St Wilfrid’s Hospice

St Wilfrid’s Hospice is a local charity providing skilled and compassionate care and treatment for all patients with complex needs as they near the end of life.

St Wilfrid’s Hospice was registered as a charity in 1982 by a group of active local supporters. A hospice is not just a building, it is a way of caring for people. Hospice care aims to improve the lives of people whose illness is no longer curable. It helps people to live as actively as possible after diagnosis to the end of their lives, however long that may be. The highest value is put on respect and choice.

  • We serve a catchment area of 230,000
  • Caring for over 1,000 people a year
  • Hospice care is free of charge
  • Two thirds of all care is provided in patients' own homes
  • One in three of all patients we support are under 65
  • Hospice care is for any illness that is beyond the point of cure
  • Each year 15% of the people we support have a non cancer diagnosis and this number is growing each year
  • It costs on average £3,500 to support each patient
  • The NHS gives us just 15% towards the cost of hospice care
  • Over 500 volunteers support the work of the Hospice
  • We're building a new hospice to enable us to respond to growing demand for our services
